Drywall Patching & Wood Rot Repair for Painting Projects
Paint-ready repairs: drywall patches, texture matching, caulking and rotted trim or fascia, done before the paint so the finish looks right and lasts.
New paint over damaged surfaces shows every flaw and fails early. Canopy Painting handles the repairs that belong to a painting job, from nail pops and cracks to soft trim, so you aren't coordinating a handyman and a painter separately.
Drywall: patches, cracks, nail pops and water-stain prep
- Nail pops, dings and small holes: set, fill, sand and spot-prime.
- Cracks: cut out and tape or fill, depending on the cause, so they're less likely to telegraph back through the paint.
- Larger holes and damaged sections: patched and finished flush with the wall.
- Water stains: we find out whether the leak is fixed first. A stain-blocking primer helps hide a stain, but it does not fix a leak. If a ceiling or wall is still getting wet, the source needs repair before we paint.
Texture matching
Patches that don't match the surrounding texture stand out, especially under side light. We match common finishes such as orange peel and knockdown by hand-texturing or spraying the patch, then priming and painting the whole wall or ceiling so the repair disappears. Results vary with the age and condition of the original texture, and we'll tell you what to expect in your estimate.
Wood rot: trim, fascia, soffit and door frames
Wood rot is a moisture problem first and a paint problem second. In Tallahassee's wet summers (about 58.8 inches of rain a year; Florida Climate Center, 1991-2020 normals), failed caulk, clogged gutters and bare end-grain are common ways water gets in. For paint-prep repairs we:
- Probe suspect trim, fascia, soffit boards and door frames and mark soft spots in your written estimate.
- Replace or repair non-structural boards and fill minor damage with a repair product made for exterior wood.
- Prime all bare wood, caulk joints and paint all sides we can reach, so the repair is sealed.
- Point out the likely water source (gutters, flashing, grading, caulk) so the problem doesn't come back.
What's outside paint-prep scope
We keep repairs to what a painting job reasonably includes. Structural framing, roof work, siding replacement, window or door installation and anything that needs a building permit are outside our scope. If we find them, we'll tell you and point you toward the right trade rather than paint over the problem. Widespread mold, active leaks and fire or flood damage should be handled by a specialist before painting.
Where these repairs fit
- Inside: part of an interior painting scope, and common in rental turnovers and sell-ready packages.
- Outside: part of an exterior painting scope, after washing and prep.
Repair questions
Can you fix a hole I made moving furniture? Yes. Small drywall repairs are routine.
Will the patch show? Our goal is for it not to. Texture and sheen are the usual giveaways, so we match both and paint the full surface. We'll tell you if the existing texture makes a perfect match unlikely.
Do you replace rotted fascia or trim? Non-structural trim and fascia, yes. Anything structural, we refer out.
Is repair included in the estimate? It's itemized in your free written estimate, so you see what's repair and what's paint. See how we estimate.
